Early Life and Education

Viola Davis was born on August 11, 1965, in St. Matthews, South Carolina, to Mae Alice Davis, a maid, factory worker, and homemaker, and Dan Davis, a horse trainer. She has five siblings.

Davis was detained with her mother at a civil rights protest when she was two years old. Davis is a second cousin of actor Mike Colter, who is best known for playing Marvel Comics’ Luke Cage.

Davis went to Central Falls High School, and she credits her interest in the arts in part to her love of theatrical acting. Davis was a TRIO Upward Bound and TRIO Student Support Services participant as a teenager. She was a member of the Drama Division’s “Group 22” (1989–93) throughout her four years at the Juilliard School.

Davis majored in drama and was a member of the National Student Exchange program at Rhode Island College. Davis’s potential was spotted by a director of the program, Bernard Masterson, while he was enrolled at the Young People’s School for the Performing Arts in West Warwick, Rhode Island.
