Early Life

Robin Rene Roberts was born on November 23rd of 1960 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Her father, Colonel Lawrence E. Roberts, was once a pilot with the Tuskegee Airmen. She was raised in Mississippi in a household that stressed the importance of discipline, determination, and religion. She graduated from high school as the class of salutatorian before attending Southeastern Louisiana University. She had been offered a basketball scholarship at Lousiana State, but she declined. However, she went on to become a major star on the basketball team of Southeastern Louisiana University and was their third-top-scorer by the time she graduated in 1983 cum laude with a degree in communication.

Robin Roberts chose to pursue a career in journalism after graduating from college, as she wanted to follow in the footsteps of an older sister who was an established journalist by that point. For the next three years, she acted in similar capacities for networks in Biloxi, Nashville, and Georgia.

After gaining valuable experience and working her way up the ladder to bigger networks, Robin Roberts was offered a position at ESPN as a sportscaster in 1990. Roberts subsequently appeared on “SportsCenter” until 2005. During this period, she also began to appear on ABC’s “Good Morning America” from time to time.
