Early Life
Nate Diaz was born in 1985 in Stockton, California to a Mexican-American family. He has an older brother named Nick, with whom he began training in martial arts at the age of 11. As a teen, Diaz went to Tokay High School in Lodi, California. Diaz began his professional fighting career competing primarily for World Extreme Cagefighting. In his first fight in 2004, he won against Alejandro Garcia. Two years later, competing for the WEC Lightweight Championship, he lost in the second round to Hermes França. Beyond WEC, Diaz also fought in Pancrase and Strikeforce.
Personal Life
In 2012, Diaz received his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt from the Pleasant Hill, California training facility Cesar Gracie. With his brother, Diaz runs a Brazilian jiu-jitsu school in Stockton, California called Nick Diaz Academy. The Diaz brothers also founded a CBD company called Game Up Nutrition, and partnered with California Finest for a licensed line of marijuana pre-rolls. With his girlfriend Misty Brown, Diaz has a daughter named Nikayla.
Controversies
Over the course of his UFC career, Diaz has courted controversy for his occasionally rash and inflammatory behavior. In 2013, he was suspended by the UFC for 90 days and issued a $20,000 fine for using a homophobic slur on Twitter. Later, in 2015, he attracted attention for a profane post-fight interview on live television during which he called out fighter Conor McGregor. At a post-fight press conference in 2016, Diaz violated the USADA rule by smoking a CBD vape pen within four hours after his fight. However, as CBD is not considered a performance-enhancing drug, he was not sanctioned. The USADA subsequently lifted the substance from its banned list.

Apart from making a name inside the octagon, Nate Diaz has also made moves outside of it. Nate, along with his brother Nick Diaz, has been involved with numerous business ventures. The Diaz Brothers have introduced their own CBD company named Game Up Nutrition. The brand involves quality products such as CBD oil, hemp flower and CBD pre-rolls. Not only are they organic but also vegan-friendly as the brothers have been vegan for the past decade or so. Nate is also the official spokesperson of Lodi Vintners, a winery based out of California and has also appeared on their billboards.
In an interview with MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, Nate said he didn’t need to fight because he had other business ventures to make money which explains his lack of activity in the UFC. Nate Diaz comes from an extremely humble background, and the first thing that came upon him when signing his UFC contract was to buy his mother a house and himself a car. He did go to buy himself a car, wishing to buy a Cadillac however he was tricked into buying a Honda Civic. He owns a house in his hometown of Stockton, which is believed to be worth around $430,000.
