The late actor and comedian Paul Gilbert, and actress Barbara Crane adopted Melissa. Gilbert’s parents later divorced, and Gilbert stayed with her mother. At the age of 11, Gilbert’s father passed away. Gilbert was raised in a Jewish religion but did not have any formal education or any religious norms growing up.

Career
Melissa started appearing in commercials and TV shows as a child. Her first role as a child was on the television show ‘Little House on the Prairie as Laura Ingalls Winder from 1874 to 1983. This show became a huge hit during the years it aired. She also appeared in several television films such as ‘The Miracle Worker and ‘The Diary of Anne Frank.’ On the completion of her show, she starred in more movies and feature films including some famous ones such as, ‘Sylvester’, ‘Blood Vows: The Story of a Mafia wife’, ‘Without her Consent’, ‘Killer Instinct’, ‘Hollywood Wives: The new Generation’ and many more to name.
