Mary Jean “Lily” Tomlin was born on the 1st of September, 1939, in Detroit. She has a younger brother named Richard Tomlin. Her parents were Southern Baptists who moved to Detroit from Paducah, Kentucky, during the Great Depression. She attended Wayne State University and originally studied biology. She auditioned for a play, and it sparked her interest in a career in the theatre, and she changed her major. After college, she started doing stand-up comedy in nightclubs in Detroit and later in New York City.

In 1971, Tomlin met her future wife, writer Jane Wagner. In 2013, after being together for 42 years, they were finally able to marry at a private ceremony in Los Angeles. Tomlin rose to fame when she starred in the film ‘And the Band Played On. She earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie. In 1975, Tomlin made her film debut in ‘Nashville.’ For her performance, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She continued success in 1977 when she starred alongside Art Carney in the comedy-mystery ‘The Late Show.’ Tomlin teamed up with Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton in ‘9 to 5’ in 1980.
