Early Life
Jonathan Edward Bernthal was born on the 20th of September 1976, in Washington D.C., the United States. He was raised in a Jewish family by parents Joan and Eric Bernthal. His dad worked as a lawyer and was the chairperson of the board of directors for the Humane Society before retiring in 2019. Bernthal grew up alongside two brothers namely Nicholas and Thomas. His brother is a retired producer for NBC and the founder and CEO of Kelton Global which is an enterprise consulting company. Moving on to his education, Jon completed his high school graduation from the Sidwell Friends School and then attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs. While studying in college he was interested in sports and used to play baseball. He dropped out of college to enroll at The School of Moscow Art Theatre in Russia, after being encouraged by his acting professor Alma Becker. Jon was founded by the executive head of Harvard’s Institute for Advanced Theater Training while in Moscow. In 2002, he completed his studies and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Cambridge, Massachusetts. After that, Jon relocated to New York City to pursue his acting career.

Jon Bernthal married Erin Angle, a trauma nurse on September 25, 2010, in Potomac, Maryland. Erin is the niece of retired professional wrestler Kurt Angle. The couple welcomed their first son, Henry, in August 2011. Another son named Billy followed in January 2013, and a girl named Adeline was welcomed in February 2015. Bernthal is an outspoken advocate of pit bulls. He is a spokesperson for the Animal Farm Foundation, an organization that rescues pit bulls and promotes equal treatment of the breed. Bernthal has three pit bulls of his own. Two of them, Boss and Venice, appear in his 2012 film Rampart. Bam Bam is his third pit bull. When he was in his 30s, Jon had an altercation that changed his life. While walking his dog, he was confronted by a stranger who began to harass him. A fight ensued. In a 2017 interview with Esquire, Bernthal said he hit the man, causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head on the pavement. The man was slow to regain consciousness. When police arrived, Jon was taken into custody for questioning but was ultimately let go when it was determined he was acting in self defense. The incident scared Bernthal straight from ever getting into public confrontations again, as he realized just a small twist of fate would have landed him in prison for decades.

Career
After moving to New York City, Bernthal has performed in more than thirty Off-Broadway plays within 4 years. During that time he also had several minor guest appearances in TV series including, Boston Legal, CSI: Miami, and How I Met Your Mother. In 2006, Jon moved from New York to Los Angeles. He then booked his first recurring, regular role on a TV series with the CBS sitcom The Class in 2006. However, the series was canceled after its first season. After that, he had appearances in movies such as Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center and Day Zero.
The biggest breakthrough moment of his career was cast for the role of Shane Walsh in the action-thriller television series, The Walking Dead. In this show, he appeared from 2010 to 2012 and came back in 2018 in the episode of What Comes After. The actor received a lot of appreciation for his work as well as was nominated for the 2011 Scream Awards in the category of Breakout Performance – Male.
