Early Life
Jeffrey Alan Cook was born on 27th August 1949 in Fort Payne, Alabama. Cook attended Fort Payne High School and Jacksonville State University before obtaining a broadcast engineer license and working as a disc jockey at a local radio station while still in high school.
Personal Life
Jeff Cook built his home, Cook Castle, in the same region where he lived with his wife, Lisa Williams, whom he married in 1995. Cook played several instruments during his career, including piano, guitar, fiddle, bass guitar, banjo, and mandolin. Cook received a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 2012. He announced in 2018 that he would no longer be touring due to the effects of his medical condition. He is also the founder of The Jeff and Lisa Cook Foundation and The Jeff and Lisa Cook Children’s Home, both of which house orphaned children from around the world. Cook joined Alabama on their 50th-anniversary tour in 2022. Sadly, Cook died of disease complications on November 7, 2022, in Destin, Florida, at the age of 73.
Career
Cook began his musical career as a member of the band “The Reivers” in the late 1960s. Cook formed Wild Country with his cousins, singer Randy Owen and bassist Teddy Gentry, and the band became popular in the South. The Reivers were successful, releasing two albums and opening for acts such as the Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd. They were especially popular in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and eventually relocated there, where they performed regularly at the Bowery.
